Om denne aktiviteten
It might be surprising to discover how religion is embedded into Colombian society. It is a factor that defines many social and cultural aspects, and has a strong influence on Colombians' lifestyles. This tour goes beyond pilgrimage; our focus is to understand the history and current life of Bogot through the most notable connection throughout the last 5 centuries: the Catholic Religion. The Legacy Churches Tour starts by visiting the San Francisco church, which contrary to the common belief, is the first church of Bogota. Here we will learn more surrounding the time that Spanish culture and religion was imposed onto pre-Hispanic cultures. Then we will walk along the vivid pedestrian pathway of the Carrera Septima, all the way up to Plaza de Bolvar, home to the Prime Cathedral. This magnificent colonial construction houses many secrets of the Catholic mission on its faade - full of symbols. Afterwards, we will walk up the cobblestone streets of La Candelaria neighborhood until we reach Iglesia del Carmen. The 1933 Gothic architecture will help us understand the way Virgin Mary has been interpreted and venerated in different ways and fashions throughout the Catholic world. Finally we will drive to the south of the city, to the 20 de Julio neighborhood. There we will witness the largest temple of the Catholic faith, which happens to combine Colombian folklore with the interpretation of the bible. Iglesia del Divino Nio. Lean more about this iconic church, why it has become the favorite of Colombians and learn about the amazing work of its architect, Juan Rizzo.
